My dad, Kent Finlay was recently diagnosed with a relapse of multiple myeloma (the bone marrow cancer that he had in 2003 http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/multiple-myeloma/DS00415). Thankfully, doctors caught it early and he's already undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Since this isn't our first rodeo with multiple myeloma, we know the experts in nearby San Antonio. They suggest the same bone marrow transplant that Dad had before. As with all major medical procedures, it's pretty costly, but thankfully, we fully understand what the procedure entails this time. Everything including prep and recovery should take about six weeks. Then he'll be out of commission for about 2-3 months as his cells strengthen.
Dad was honored at MusicFest in Steamboat about a week ago and wanted to be on his top game for that. The show went really well, and he had an amazing time. Now he's back at home, and hoping to schedule the transplant in March. We will be dealing with things between now and then. It will be difficult, but we're optimistic for Dad's full recovery again.
Dad's diagnosis has reminded us all how important it is to live every day to its fullest. We have so much to be thankful for. We're grateful to each and every one of you and truly treasure our friendships. Here's to good things to come in 2014.
